Yoshio Nakajima, original collage Ubbeboda Symposium, 1974

Offwhite sheet, 29.5 x 21 cm, hand signed in lower right corner. With collaged elements comprising a b/w porn magazine sheet portraying a woman in beaver shot position, tape, orange string, a printed card with small impressed metal ring, printed and photocopied texts on paper, 13 rubber stamps in purple and red. The main text presents an invitation to take part in the Ubbeboda Symposium opening on Jan 26 1974 with the performance 'PS1 Mandala 0000 Nirvana' at the Ubbeboda Arkiv Bibliotek, organized by Nakajima, Sven Malvin, Klaus Groh et al. A handwritten text and various stamps feature the term 'Unbeat', used by the artist to denominate his actions and exhibitions. Other stamps refer to the Ubbedoda art center set up by Nakajima in the small village of Lönsboda, Sweden. Small pinholes in corners, else a striking work in very good condition.

Japanese experimental artist and cultural activist Yoshio Nakajima (1940) worked amongst the avant-garde in Europe in the 1960s and 1970s. He was involved with Provo in the Netherlands, Happenings in Belgium (in both countries he was expelled for staging illegal performances), the Swedish Bauhaus Situationistes, Fluxus and Mail Art, coining his own performative actions 'Unbeat'. From 1973 he started organizing art seminars and events from his base in Ubbeboda (Sweden), drawing international artists to the small village as a kind of 'Art Missionary/Professor'.
