KWY magazine was founded in Paris in 1958 by the Portuguese artist couple Lourdes Castro and René Bertholo, named after the three letters that do not exist in the Portuguese alphabet. Starting out as a vehicle for the Portuguese avant-garde in exile, it grew to include contributors such as Christo, Pol Bury, Gonçalo Duarte, Escada and Jan Voss. Twelve issues were produced between 1958-1963. The KWY Group was active between 1960-1967, its members were regular contributors to the magazine who often exhibited together.
