Aspen, The Magazine in a Box. Issues 5-6, 6 A and 7. New York, Roaring Fork Press, 1967-1969

Multimedia magazine of the arts published by Phyllis Johnson from 1965 to 1971, editors and designers changed for each issue. The magazine came in a customized box filled with booklets, phonograph recordings, posters, postcards. Included in this lot are: (1) Aspen 5 + 6, for Stephane Mallarmé (aka The Minimalism Issue), 1967. Boxed edition consisting of 28 numbered elements edited and designed by Brian O’Doherty, with art direction by David Dalton and Lynn Letterman. Contributions by Susan Sontag, Roland Barthes, William Burroughs, John Cage, Marcel Duchamp, Merce Cunningham, Dan Graham, Sol LeWitt et al. Two-part box, with all items present except item 15 in photocopy (Michel Butor poem) and missing item 24, the often lacking 8 mm film reel that was meant to be send after publication but never made it to this copy (replaced by the publisher's note that the reel was to follow separately). Box a bit soiled and with small repair.

(2) Aspen 6A: The Judson Manipulations (aka The Performance Art issue). This was an extra number only distributed to the subscribers, focused on the performance art scene around New York’s Judson Gallery. The contents are kept in a paper folder, missing the original mailing envelope (a photocopy of the front of the envelope is added). (3) Aspen 7, the British issue. Cardboard box with die-cut colour cover design by Richard Smith. Works by Ossie Clark, Eduardo Paolozzi, Peter Blake, Ian Hamilton Finlay, John Furnival, David Hockney, as well as two flexi-disks - one has John Lennon playing Radio Play and the other contains Yoko Ono's Song for John. Fourteen items as issued (not as described on box). Box with wear, item 13 (Finlay's poem) is trimmed 1 cm, all other contents fine. (total 3)
