Just Another Asshole, Nos.3, 5, 6 and 7, 1979-1987

Legendary mixed-media publication series edited by Barbara Ess from 1978 to 1987, launched in New York City’s Lower East Side's No Wave community. Each issue took a different form: zine, LP record, large-format tabloid, magazine, exhibition catalog and paperback book. Included in this lot are: (1) No.3, 1979. Newsprint tabloid, 40.5 x 28 cm, 48 pp. Co-edited by Jane M. Sherry. Contains various b/w photocopies, collages and text-based works by Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Kim Gordon, Carla Liss, Robin Winters, Dan Graham et al. Wraps with small tears at spine.

(2) No.5, 1981. Vinyl record and CD. Edited by Barbara Ess and Glenn Branca. Black vinyl album in white record sleeve printed with a 'Just Another Asshole' stamp on front and track list label on verso. Produced with support from White Columns, the 77 track album features ultra short sound works (ca. 45 seconds), by 83 artists and musicians such as Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Isa Genzken, Bobby G., Arleen Schloss, Herr Lugus and Zev. Also includes the cd reissue released in 1995 on Atavistic Records. Record in very good state with only faint wear, sleeve shows rubbing and soiling, and a small tear at the lower corner. (3) No.6, 1983. Edited by Barbara Ess and Glenn Branca in the form of a pulp paperback book with writings by 62 artists. Softcover, 17.8 x 11 cm, 186 pp. Contributions by Kathy Acker, Jenny Holzer, Peter Nadin, Barbara Kruger, Richard Prince, Kiki Smith, Michael Smith, Lee Ranaldo, Anne Turyn, Linda Yablonsky et al. In good condition. (4) No.7, Thought Objects, 1987. Edited by Barbara Ess and Glenn Branca. Softcover, 21 x 21 cm, 142 pp. Photographs by 120 artists and essays by 9 writers. Includes photos by Sarah Charlesworth, Nan Goldin, Jack Goldstein, Dan Graham, Peter Hujar, Barbara Kruger, Richard Prince, David Wojnarowicz and many others. Essays by Gary Indiana, Cookie Mueller, Amy Taubin, Lynne Tillman, et al. Minor rubbing along spine. (total 5)
