Folds; closed tears/ restored marginal dam. spot; remnants of former mount verso. De Meyer p. 241 ff and Noman cat. 84. On the subject, see De Meyer 553 ff. One of the rare woodcut prints on big game hunting, coming from much older stock. It was originally printed in the early 18th century by Gysbert de Groot-Keur in Amsterdam. The old blocks went via Kannewet and Stichter tot Noman, who published them in 2 known variants, both numbered 84; (2) "O hoe edel is dit kind, dat tot deugden is gezind!". Catchpenny print, sheet size 37 x 33.5 cm, w. 12 fingercol. woodcuts (probably cut by Christiaan Jacob Schuyling, the final woodcut signed illegibly in the block), each w. 4-line letterpress verse below, numbered "No. 17" in upper right corner, Rott, T.C. Hoffers, ca. 1830. Neatly restored copy. De Meyer p. 171 ff, Hoffers cat. 17. One of the rare catchpenny prints published by Hoffers (active between 1820 and 1837); (3) "Hoe moed en trouw, gepaard aan kist, weleer de Groot te redden wist (...)." Catchpenny print, sheet size 39 x 33 cm., w. 12 fingercol. woodcuts, each w. 2-line letterpress verse below, numbered "No. 32" in upper right corner, Rott., T.J. Wijnhoven Hendriksen, ca. 1835. Apart from some folds a very fine copy. De Meyer 341-342, Wijnhoven-Hendriksen cat. 32. Depicting the spectacular escape of Hugo de Groot from his prison at Loevesteyn castle, hidden in a book-trunk (1621). On Hugo de Groot or Grotius, see several other items in this auction.
