Hammond Guthrie, Instant Poetry, 1973

Unpublished original manuscript from the archive of Willem Sandberg. Blue portfolio with the title and the addresses of Guthrie's studio and Sandberg's home on the cover. Contains 34 loose leaves, 24 x 20 cm, with hand press, rubber stamp and collages intended to be printed as an artists' book. Each page is titled, signed and dated on verso.

Guthrie (1948-2019) was part of the 60s-70s alternative literary scene in California and London. As a writer he contributed to the International Times, Schmuck, and publications edited by Michael Gibbs. Settling in Amsterdam in the early 70s his printmaking projects were supported by Sandberg, the former director of the Stedelijk Museum. Guthrie's artistic career was cut short by the distraction of the bustling drug culture in Amsterdam and eventually he moved back to the USA. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art holds a work in their collection which is similar to the manuscript, a box with loose leaved collages called 'The Original is a Reproduction'.
