[Second World War] (Diary of C.Ph.)

Diary in pen, first page signed "Kitty Ouwens", with contributions dated 16 February 1945 to 14 July 1946, 2 vols. in one binding paged (2)111,(1); 43 p., ring binding with cardboard endpapers, original faux leather, 23.5 x 15 cm.

Primarily interesting because of the extensive, fascinating accounts concerning the Famine of 1944 and the shooting at the Dam of 7 May 1945. The brave, young Amsterdam writer of the diary, Cleantje Ph. "Kitty" Ouwens, is named in full in one of 4 tipped-in letters (this letter signed with (facetious) "Hannibal" and "je Henk"). At the time she still lived with her parents at Vijzelstraat 54 and in any case has a younger brother named Frits. Interesting personal diary with a large number of facts, addressed to Henk (who she sometimes gives the nickname Hannibal), who is sent to fight at the front by the Germans. "Vandaag begin ik in dit dagboek, dat ik bestemd heb voor jou, Henk, omdat ik je geen brieven meer kan sturen, want ze komen toch niet aan. Wanneer ik dan naar jou verlang, kan ik hierin met je praten en wanneer je eindelijk weer bij mij bent, kunnen we het misschien samen lezen. Samen met de brieven die ik je gestuurd heb, kunnen wij dan later zien, hoe ik de tijd, zonder jou doorgeworsteld ben." On p.5: "Maar och, wat vraag ik je allemaal je kunt me er toch geen antwoord op geven. Wanneer je dit boek leest, ben je bij mij en dan kan oom Adolf voor mijn part de brieven [which did not arrive] in zijn haar smeren of weet ik waarvoor gebruiken." Many passages are of course about what became later known as the Hunger winter. Parts on long queues in shops, food stamps, a butchered dog (p.9, "Stel je eens voor, dat wij Robbie op zouden gaan eten. Maar je kunt niet weten waar je nog weleens toe zult komen"). On p.14 and 15 a passage about the dangerous, illegal use of power for light and radio, punishable by death if discovered. Another illegal activity is described on p. 17, where, under cover of the fog, Wim and Hetty cut down a tree on the street for firewood after eight ("Het is misschien wel een beetje vernielachtig, maar wanneer wij het niet doen, doet een ander het. Dunne bomen zie je zo goed als niet meer") (this "tree hunt" returns several times throughout the diary). On p.19 an account of Corry who returned with an abundance of meat from the farmer, while her suitcase with many articles for trade was stolen ("kortom het was een reuze sof. Maar nu hebben we sedert lang weer eens goed gegeten."). On 1 March, Kitty writes that it is the 20th first day of the month since Henk left, this says something about the time Kitty and Henk had not seen each other by then. On p.32 stories on white bread of the Swedish Red Cross ("je weet gewoon niet wat je eet") and stories about razzias on the same page ("verschrikkelijk toch hè, die menschenroof, want dat is het toch"). Nearing 5 May the tension rises to great heights, the euphoria of the liberation is extensively described by Kitty. But on 7 May the famous shooting at the Dam takes place (see http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schietpartij_op_de_Dam_van_7_mei_1945). Kitty was there in person and describes the terrifying event on pp. 78-80, followed by an account of the arrival of the Canadians. On p. 82 the news that many Dutch boys sent abroad are on the way home and that the countdown to Henk's return has begun ("!!!!"). This is followed by a passage on the "hair cutting campaign" against "meiden die met moffen gegaan hebben", "ze verdienen het, maar ik kan er niet om juichen". On 18 June, Kitty Ouwens closes the first part of her diary: "Lieveling, Nu heeft het geen zin meer om nog verder te schrijven. Eindelijk hebben we hier dan het "happy-end". De rest kunnen we er wel bij denken hè. Nu gaan we samen onze toekomst tegemoet." The second, much shorter part of the diary begins on 26-2-1946 ("een dagboek en geen brievenboek, zooals het eerste deel", else with the same detailed style of writing) and ends on 14 July 1946.
