PASSED

[Slavery. Cuba] Collection of 28 Spanish letters and completed forms,

all Cuba (Havana), mostly ca. 1850-1875 and ca. 22 x 15 cm., 17 documents have their modern Dutch translations added.

Most documents are more or less tanned and several are slightly affected by wormholes (sometimes in the text). Interesting collection of rare documents concerning the death and possible sacraments and funeral of (runaway) slaves. Most documents contain not only the names of the deceased slaves, but also those of parents and/or possible children, as well as information of their origins and the names of the "owners". 7 of these documents are completed by hand, signed and stamped death certificates of runaway slaves, of the Real Hospital de San Felipe y Santiago (1x mentions the Judicial Mortuary for deceased slaves). 3 documents are stamped by various "Celaduria" (Depositories) of the Third District. One of the letters concerns the death of the toddler Esperanza (father unknown), daughter of the "black, creole Isabel", "both in my possession, her body is located in my house on Prado road, number three".
