Jacob van Campen (1596-1657) was a Dutch architect and artist. He designed the Royal Palace in Amsterdam, the former city hall. The building was intended to be perfect, with perfect dimensions, perfect ratios and a perfect message to the spectator. Its strength lay in the rigorous proportions and the very modest decoration. Constantijn Huygens called it the "eighth wonder of the world".
