[In beautiful blindstamped binding] Institutionum DN. Iustiniani sacratissimi principis

PP. A. Libri IIII. Ex manvscriptorvm librorvm, & digestorum collatione castigati (...) Ludovico Russardo (...) auctore. Antwerp, Christoffel Plantijn, 1566, 166,(2); 132,(4 blank) p., finely bound in contemporary blindstamped pigskin dated 1571 [see description below].

A library description we consulted speaks of an "illustration" (plate?), we were unable to verify this. The rare first Plantijn edition of this text edited by Russardus, no copies in PiCarta (which does have copies from the 1567 edition). Bound in a very fine blindstamped binding with a panel on the front cover with the figure of Justitia between owner's initials "M.S.V." and date "1571", back cover with panel on which the figure of Fortuna, both panels monogrammed "W.K." and surrounded by roll stamps with putti. The back cover in particular is remarkably well-preserved and highly detailed. Bound behind: Novellae constitvtiones Dn. Ivstiniani sacratissimi principis, Versae quidem è Græco in Latinum à Gregorio Haloandro; collatae verò nuper cum fidelissimo exemplari Scrimgeriano, & innumeris locis emendatæ, vt perpetuæ ad eas notæ indicabunt: Francisco Duareno (...), auctore. Antwerp, Christoffel Plantijn, 1567, 495 p., with woodcut printer's mark on the title (lacks index of 9 p.). Both titles with ("doublet") library stamp on reverse of the title and here and there with old annotations in margins or vaguely waterstained. Front cover lightly cut off (incl. gilding).
