[Beautiful copy from the library of Du Tillet] Quinti Horatii Flacci Opera.

London, John Pine, 1733/ 1737, 2 volumes, I: (32),176,(3),178-264,(2), II: (24),48,(3),50-94,(3),96-152,(3),154-172,(3),174-191,(14) pages entirely illustrated by Pine with numerous illustrations, contemporary uniform red morocco, each board with gilt edges on inside and outside, richly gilt spine with 2 morocco letterpieces, all edges gilt, 4to.

Beautiful set on large paper with only minimal wear and scratches (one slightly larger scratch on front board volume I). According to an annotation in pencil, this is the copy of Du Tillet, whose famous library with 18th-century illustrated books (as the collection M. du T.] was sold at auction on 6 December 1938 at Giraud-Badin (this copy was number 37). Volume I has a small gilt leather ex libris with a Greek cross, probably Du Tillet's. Another (slightly inferior) copy on large paper and bound in exactly the same manner was sold at Sotheby's in November 2011. Our copy with on page 108 of the second volume the corrected word "potest", so the second state of the first edition (the first mentions "post est"). The book is considered a peak in 18th-century book art, see Printing and the Mind of Man number 103. The book became overwhelmingly successful at home and abroad, considering the long list of subscribers engraved in italics in both volumes by Pine. On Pine, see: https://tinyurl.com/m9sv6tz.
