Text and prints rather tanned; one plate with large tear, occ. smaller tears, water stain to endpaper and some smaller defects. Leather on upper joint split and one corner of the sl. stained front board expertly restored. Still a good copy with the bookplate of Vincent van Gogh (1866-1911) etched by Marius Bauer to inside front board. Van Gogh's splendid print collection and library were sold at various auctions from 1911 to 1918. According to Herman de la Fontaine Verwey, this was one of the most extraordinary collections of books ever collected in the Netherlands. The standard work on architecture by Jacob van Campen and the art of Hubertus and Artus Quellinus for the Dam Palace, with engravings of all facades, plans of the entire building and the large hall, interior views and all sculptures. Particularly impressive are the giant plates of the tympana at almost 170 cm in width. Earlier editions appeared in instalments from c. 1655. After our edition, the series was issued again several times in the 18th century.
