Rotterdam, J. Hendriksen, n.d. (1806), (4),20 p., with 10 folding woodcut plates, contemporary wrapper, 4to.

The book is slightly foxed and falling apart, several text pages and plates loose/ tender; one plate reinforced on spine. Despite these defects still a good copy, perfectly restorable thanks to the good condition of the leaves. A rare chapbook with emphasis on the plates, which are numerous and exceptionally large for this type of book. The first edition appeared at Amsterdam in 1771, in the same place a second edition ca. 1790. With each plate, there are two pages each time with a part in verse and a narrative part. The work tells of a German alchemist who discovered the secret of an eternally burning lamp. In order to keep this secret, he hid the lamp in the basement of his castle, and had it defended by a kind of robot-man with club and fur hat. After the death of the alchemist people entered the basement; their footsteps on the stairs activated the robot-man and with his club he smashed the lamp and its secret to smithereens.
