Two manuals for general education: (1) Jongmans-Onderwyser

Leerende op een korte, dog klare, en bevattelyke wyze, de voornaamste Wetenschappen die voor een Jongman, van een goede Educatie, voor eerst 't nodigst om te weeten en te leeren zyn (...). Ten dienste van de Jeugd in deze ordre geschikt door Johann Hermann Knoop (...). Amsterdam, S.J. Baalde, 1769, (24),878,(48) p., with many illustrations on 6 folding, engraved plates, many letterpress numerical examples and tables in the text, contemporary half calf, gilt and ribbed back with morocco letterpiece, large 8vo.

Water stain in inner margin at the beginning, here and there slightly browned/ foxed, binding with some wear/ tears in the leather yet still a good copy of a rare work. The first edition appeared in 1756-1759. This copy was originally part (letterpiece numbered I) of a set of uniform bindings, but complete in itself. Lovely, very extensive manual for young adults regarding arithmetics, bookkeeping, letter writing, drafting obligations and contracts, geometry, surveying, mapmaking, solid geometry, etc. See also lot 525; (2) Huisboek voor vaderlandsche huisgezinnen, door Johannes Florentinus Martinet, meester der vrije konsten (...). Amsterdam, J. Allart, 1793, (8),546 p., contemporary half calf, gilt and ribbed back with morocco letterpiece. With notes dated 1898 in blue pencil on inside front board, binding with some wear, backstrip lacks a small piece at the top. Still a good, untrimmed copy of the first edition, reprinted in 1803 and 1831 (total 2).
