Alison Knowles and Pauline Oliveros, Postcard Theater

New York, Aenjai Graphics, 1974. Photomechanical print, 10.5 x 14.5 cm. Knowles and Oliveros produced a series of 6 postcards that reframe male composers by using female epithets and witty declarative statements as a commentary on the marginal status of women in the music world.

Four cards are in this lot: Chopin had dishpan hands (Hannah and Jessie Higgins play in Roaring Brook). + Bach was a mother (Jessie Higgins with a flower). + Brahms was a two-penny harlot (Knowles at the beach, Oliveros with dagger). + Mozart was a black Irish washerwoman (Oliveros at the Zoo). Featured are the artists themselves and Knowles' and Dick Higgins' twin daughters.
