[Unknown "title edition"] Het konincklyk treur-toonneel,

ofte op- en onder-gangh der keyseren, koningen en vorsten: Beginnende met het Roomsche Keyserrijck, tot aen het Jaer 1500 na de geboorte Christi. Het eerste deel [= all under this title, see note]. Uyt verscheyde schrijvers en talen versamelt, door L. v. Bos. Geçiert met kunstige Afbeeldinghen der voornaemste personen, seer konstigh na 't leven in kooper gesneden. Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfganck, 1660 [address on bound-along strip], (22),684 p., with engraved frontispiece, 35 portraits and 6 plates, contemporary turned vellum with later title in ink on spine, small 8vo.

Quires Gg and Hh bound in each other's place. Very good copy, with in contemporary pen to last flyleaf "Door ordre Grooty". An exceptionally intriguing copy, as there are no copies known of this edition. Wolfganck did not even bother to have a new title page printed, but simply had an additional strip bound along which covers the original Amsterdam address of Jan Jacobsz. Schipper, dated 1659 (the colophon at the end remains unchanged: printed by Gillis Joosten, 1659). The discolouring of the title page and a small edge caused by the top edge of the strip show that this strip has always been part of the book. The case becomes even more interesting when we consult the digitised KB copy of an accompanying work online: Het vorstelick treurtoonneel, of, Op- en onder-gang der grooten. Begrijpende ontrent hondert jaren, van 1500. tot 1600. toe. Uyt verscheyde schrijvers en talen versamelt, Door L. v. Bos (...). That copy shares a similarity with our volume: a strip by Wolfganck with the date 1660 covers the original address of Schipper (1658). The KB description does not discuss this any further; only Wolfganck is mentioned with the short annotation "Herdr." The first edition of the Konincklyk treur-toonneel appeared in 1656, the first edition of the Vorstelick treurtoonneel in 1655. Part of our work discusses the Turkish rulers, with 6 fine portraits.
