Annual Avantgarde Festival of New York, posters

This lot contains 11 announcement posters for the Annual Avantgarde Festival of New York (out of 15 all published). Organized by cellist and performance artist Charlotte Moorman, the Annual Avantgarde Festival began in 1963 as an open forum for the experimental music scene that was emerging out of Fluxus.

The festival ran for 15 years in various locations including Central Park and the Staten Island Ferry until 1980. Notable performers at the festival included John Cage, Yoko Ono, Carolee Schneeman, John Lennon, Alison Knowles, Nam June Paik, Dick Higgins, Ray Johnson. Included are the posters for issues 1-11 (1963-1975), designed by J. McWilliams. The first four posters were offset printed black on white paper, later ones colour on white paper.
