Letters to the Amsterdam bankers and book lovers Van der Hoop and Labouchere, 1806-1822

Joshua Bates (1788-1864) to A(driaan) van der Hoop (1778-1854), Amsterdam, 22 Dec. 1819, recto; Pierre Cesar Labouchere (1772-1839) to Van der Hoop, Febr. 1820, 1.5 sides + 3 letters by others to Van der Hoop dd. 29 Jan. 1820, 18 & 19 Sept. 1822. Altogether 5 sides - signed "Coesvelt/(Rotterdam)" to P.C. Labouchere, Amsterdam, Hope & co., 2 Oct. 1806, 2.5 sides; the same, Paris, 20 May 1806. 2.5 sides - and 1 unidentified sender to unknown recipient, in French, Jan. 1819, 2 sides and 1 unidentified sender to unknown recipient, St. Petersburg, 12 Dec. 1819.

Van der Hoop and Labouchere worked for the banking firms Baring and Hope & co. A very candid correspondence about banking but also about personal matters and book collecting, as is evidenced by Bates' note to the collector Van der Hoop: "I thank you for the trouble you have taken to ascertain the handwriting I desired. I have since found means to put the authenticity of the book beyond doubt as Lord Holland [possibly Henry Richard Vassal-Fox Holland, 1773-1840] saw the author of manuscripts [sic?] at Rome before it was completed." Bates became associated with the London house Baring of Baring in the 1820s. His love of books is evidenced by the fact that he founded the Boston Public Library in 1852. (total 9)
