[Breda. 1590] "Aspicis iliacam (quid enim discriminis?) arcem. (...)."

Contemp. handcol. etching and engraving, 35 x 47.5 cm, probably by Bartholomeus Willemsz. Dolendo, published by Hendrick Hondius the Elder, ca. 1600.

A few superficial dam. spots on middle-fold; trimmed inside the platemark and mounted on a sheet of old matching laid paper. Muller, Historieplaten, 990b. Very rare, especially in finely handcoloured state. The splendid plate depicts four oval views of the capture of Breda by Maurice of Nassau from the Spanish forces, on 4 March 1590. The views themselves are set in an oval with poem by Hugo Grotius, the spaces between the views are filled with coats-of-arms and decorative elements. The corners of the plate show details on the so called "Turfschip", hiding a number of soldiers, the trick that eventually led to the victory of the Dutch.
