[Bindings. Fanfare-binding] Full, richly gilt brown mor. binding,

first half 17th cent., both covers entirely decorated w. gilt curls and dots, gilt and ribbed spine w. mor. letterpiece, 24mo.

Upper joint splitting, outer corners bumped. A very charming, French example of a binding "à la fanfare", decorated with a "mélange de fers pointillés", a style that later inspired the Dutch bookbinder Albertus Magnus. On: Aurelius Prudentius Clemens. Opera: ex postrema, doct: virorum, recensione. Amst., apud Guiljel; Ianss. Caesium (= Blaeu), 1625, 261 p., w. engr. title. Old owner's entry on title. A good copy of this early pocket edition, finely printed in a tiny type.
