Black Gate, A Newspaper Dedicated to World-wide Unity and Interest, Issue 1 (all published)
New York City, April 1967. Edited by Otto Piene and Aldo Tambellini. Newspaper in the form of a poster, 56 x 43.5 cm, folded to 28 x 21.5 cm as issued. Published to announce the program of the cross-genre, cross-media project space Black Gate in Manhattan’s East Village set up by Aldo Tambellini and Zero co-founder Otto Piene.
As stated on the poster 'Black Gate is an empty room a testing ground for radical experiences. Artists of all media are invited to use it for experimental purposes ...' Live multimedia performances and installations listed on the poster include 'The Proliferation of the Sun' by Otto Piene and 'Blackout' by Tambellini in March and April 1967, and future programs with Takahiko Limura, Kosugi and Nam June Paik. Very light creases along edges and folds, generally in very fine shape.
Apparently a follow up newspaper/poster was made by Tambellini titled Black Gate, and also numbered issue 1, featuring stills from his first videotape and a statement about the social reorientation of America in the Space Era. ref. Aldo Tambellini, Black Zero, Boris Lurie Art Foundation, 2011 p.70.
