Jean Tinguely. Original Meta matic drawing by Simon Vinkenoog, 1963
Purple, red and orange marker on thick beige paper, 27 x 21 cm, with dedication on rear. Text (translated from Dutch) reads 'Machine drawing by Tinguely played by Simon Vinkenoog ('63) presented on the occasion of his 29th birthday to Gerard S-tigter/chippers, on behalf of the family: S & Reineke'.
The Meta matic drawings were produced by an automated do-it-yourself drawing device designed by Tinguely. This copy was probably made on Méta-Matic No.10 which was part of the DYLABY exhibition co-organized by Sandberg and Tinguely at the Stedelijk Museum in 1962, and acquired for the museum collection after the show. Simon Vinkenoog (1928-2009) was a Dutch poet, writer, performer and promotor of mind-altering drugs. This copy shows nicotine exposure, with some age-related soiling, a mild water stain in lower left corner and small dog-ear to the lower right. From the collection of K. Schippers.
