A new enlarged edition of one of the author's important publications on hydraulic engineering, incorporating discussions of a.o. "Flussbaukunde", "Deichbaukunde", "Hafenbaukunde", the construction of roads, canals, bridges, locks and sluices etc. Pogg. II, p. 1316. Part 9 of vol. 3 (p. 221-54) discusses the use of inundation (flooding) for military purposes and the role of fortified cities/buildings in this military strategy. Wiebeking refers to Vauban, Carnot, Belidor etc. and refers to many Dutch cities under siege (a.o. the Siege of Leyden, 1574) explaining the role played by inundation and fortification.
