Inscribed in ink on the French title by Ter Braak: 'Voor Hannie [presumably Stolte]/Dit boek met veel herinneringen/Menno/R'dam, dec. 1931'. With numerous annotations and underlinings in pencil throughout. A unique and previously unrecorded copy of this classic Dutch novel. The inscription is almost certainly addressed to Johanna Maria Bélia Stolte (1910-2002), known as 'Hannie' or 'Hanneke'. In 1930, following a love affair, she had broken off her relationship with Ter Braak. In a letter dated February 6, 1931 Ter Braak describes novel's autobiographical content: ‘Het is min of meer een autobiografie, maar toch heel willekeurig omgefantaseerd’. The extensive annotations, clearly in Hanna's hand, engage closely with the autobiographical dimension of the character Eline, who appears to be modelled on her. To our knowledge, this has not been noticed before and is not mentioned in Léon Hanssen's classic biography of Ter Braak.

Hannie's annotations shed a new light on the novel's autobiographical dimension. Her notes consistently link fictional elements to real-life individuals, including Ter Braak's brother and mutual acquaintances: 'Hoe in godsnaam in het mogelijk, dacht hij [narrator Andreas] bij zichzelf, dat iemand zoo... zoo vlerkachtig en toch zoo betooverend over onderwerpen durft te spreken, die mij altijd zwaar en ondoorgrondelijk diep zijn voorgekomen?' (p. 105). She identifies 'iemand' als [Ter Braaks friend] 'Dick B[innendijk]'; '(...) omdat ik [narrator] geen eerbied meer heb voor de gewone heilige huisjes' (p. 117), added: 'In Zeist zeer merkbaar.'; 'We stookten elkaar op, we hadden teekens uitgebracht, om onder de bijbellezing aan het ontbijt elkaar moppen te vertellen, met onze vingers onder de tafel...' (p. 137), she adds: 'Orgelspel Menno [his brother] Wim.'; 'Hij [narrator] had toen ineens verzonnen: ik zit hier voor de ruit van het aquarium (...)' (p. 199), she specifies: 'We waren in Parijs, in 't aquarium.'; 'Zou zij misschien ook denken aan dat moment...toen ze [Eline] mij [narrator] mij dien stomp gaf?'(p. 205), she adds: 'Nooit gebeurd, wel psychisch.'
