American Art in Belgium. L'Art à l'Envers / De Kunst Omgekeerd

Offset printed tract on news sheet, 88 x 58 cm, folded three times, text in French and Dutch. Dated May 20, 1977, it criticized the exhibition 'American Art in Belgium' at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels which presented works by American artists held in Belgian private and public collections between 1945 and 1975. The pamphlet was drawn up under the editorial responsibility of Lotte Boogh Mees in Antwerp, and signed by a large group of international artists.

Their target was not American art as such, but the nationalistic concept of the exhibition and its selection criteria. Among the signatories were members of the conceptual art collective Art and Language (Sarah Charlesworth, Joseph Kosuth, Mel Ramsden, Michael Baldwin), Panamarenko, Lili Dujourie, Jan Vercruysse, Guy Mees, Jef Geys, Sol Lewitt, Dan Graham, Carolee Schneemann, Pat Steir, André Cadere, and Niele Toroni. Moderate browning of paper, small hole in the intersection of folding lines in the centre. Rare document.
