Ca. 1926-28. 39 leaves, recto only. Pencil drawings, one with gouache. Inscriptions, captions and other texts in French. Signed and dated 'G. Ferrand' in pen on inner board. 26 x 21.5 cm. Exceptional sketchbook offering a vivid documentary of everyday life in Indonesia. Includes extensive annotations - often translations of Indonesian expressions. Subjects include Borobodur (temple and landscape) volcanoes, human figures, dancers, musicians and local scenes. Notable inscriptions: "la main qui tient le Kriss", "Pendopo", "Besnijdenis", etc. with specific dates (e.g. Kreton, 16 Aug. 1923) Some motifs coloured.
