*The Gunpowder mill 'de Krijgsman' must have been initiated before 1662. Obviously the factory has had a few incidents. A chilling summary of accidents that occurred after WOII: (1) On 17 January 1947, people were busy dismantling grenades from the Second World War. Untrained soldiers caused two carts with live grenades to collide, causing one of the soldiers to drop a grenade. Seventeen people died, including three people from Muiden. (2) In 1948, one person died when a grenade exploded. (3) A year later, another person died when a gunpowder mill exploded. (4) On 13 June 1963, the gunpowder storage facility "De Eendekooi", where 30,000 kilos of explosives were stored, blew up. (5) On 2 June 1966, the trotyl factory exploded. There were many minor injuries and the damage in Muiden was enormous: in the Zuidwest district (popularly known as "De Klapwijk") almost all windows were shattered and many roofs had collapsed. (6) In two explosions in 1983, one on May 30, one on September 9, three Surinamese and one Muiden resident were killed. The factory closed its doors in 2004.
