Goltzius, H. (1558-1617). Two engravings from the series of twelve dep. the Passion of Christ

(1) The last supper. Engraving, 19.7 x 13 cm, w. dedication to Federico Borromeo in banderole at top centre, dated "A° 1598" on a plaque at the middle right, monogrammed "HG", w. privilege "Cum privil. Sa. Cae. M." and numb. "1" in the plate, mounted at upper corners under passe-partout. Good impression on rather thick paper w. remarkably wide margins, a few minor imperfections in outer blank margins. W. small unidentified printer's mark (not in Lugt) (also found on other prints in this auction). Hollstein 21, first state (of 2) and New Hollstein 1, first state (of 3). (2) Christ before Caiaphas. Engraving, 19.6 x 12.8 cm., monogrammed "HG" and dated "Ao 97" and numb. "4" in the plate, mounted at upper corners under passe-partout. Good impression on thin paper w. watermark grapes, w. thread margins. Smoothed-out central horizontal fold. Hollstein 24, only state.
