The work presents an alternative social setting in which a group of young aristocrats, disillusioned with the court culture of Louis XIV, pursue a more informal and self-directed mode of life. Henriette-Julie de Castelnau Murat (1668–1716) was an aristocratic French author associated with the Précieuses and salon culture of the late 17th century, and is regarded as an early contributor to the development of the literary fairy tale.
