Janson van Ceulen, Cornelis (II) (1634-1715) (attrib.). River landscape
with village in the background, many figures in the foreground and a small scene dep. the rape of Ganymede in the sky. Drawing in pen, 16.5 x 34.5 cm, signed "Janssenius fecit 16(73?)", on vellum. Dustsoiled and foxed, the greater part of the right margin trimmed inside the borderline. Very interesting drawing, we found a similar drawing undoubtedly by the same hand in the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, dated 1677, listed under the name "Janssenius", but w. attribution "Corneille Janssens Utrecht 1670" on the passe-partout. The artist was a miniaturist and pupil of his father Cornelis Jonson van Keulen (I) (1593-1661). The use of expensive vellum for the present drawing may be explained by the artist's familiarity with this material in his work as a miniaturist.
