Philipsen, Catharina Willy ('Kate') (1910-?). Archive
Comprising orig. drawings in var. techniques, woodcuts, lithographs, a series of 5 (of 6) children's booklets Kinderleven by H.J. Jacobs, illustrated by Kate Philipsen, num. cut-out reproductions after her illustrations, photographs after (present) drawings, two linocut printing plates, a metal printing cliché "Kate W. Philipsen. Kunstenaar weest priester", printed and drawn cards for personal advertorial purposes ("Kate Philipsen. N. Leliestraat 39 Amsterdam C. Boekverzorging, bandontwerpen, boekillustratie"), the artist's orig. diploma of the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs ("De afdeeling Grafiek", dated 17 July 1931) and a book w. manuscript story by W. Philipsen titled "In het Rijk van Koning Goedwil, Duinsprookje (...) geïllustreerd door" (not filled out), 56 p., square folio. In the archive, the name P.J. Niesten also appears ("tekeningen (±18 jaar) studies aquarel en olieverf"), the RKD provides the dates 1942-1918 and home town Leiden for this "autodidact". Among the woodcuts is an ex libris for Zr. Jac. M. Niesten. It is unclear how the Niesten and Philipsen families were connected. The artist is for some reason not listed by the RKD in The Hague. Kate Philipsen was married to Jacob Emile Gelder (1903-1966), see the other lots concerning the Gelder and Gelder-Philipsen families elsewhere in this auction.
