[Borobudur] Céphas, Kassian (1845-1912). Six albumen photos of the Borobudur

All 14.4 x 22.5 cm, on original mounts, hinged at upper margins under modern passe-partouts. Fine set of early photographs of the Borobudur. Cf. KITLV 12213, 12215, 12216, 19524 and 40193 (one unidentified). With: portrait of a Javanese woman in sarong. Gelatin silverprint, 22.5 x 16.5 cm, signed in the image. See also: G. *Kassian Cephas was the first Javanese professional photographer, working for the court of the Sultan of Yogyakarta by permission of sultan Hamenkoeboewono VI (1821-1877). Apart from portraying members of the court, he photographed monuments such as the Borobudur by order of the Archaeologische Vereeniging, for which he was awarded membership of the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde and a gold medal of honour in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
