Oranje hotel/ Eugene Lucas Sarkies (1903-

Soerabaja. Various documents of Sarkies, among others his diplomas and birth certificate, measuring bill of the parcel located at the Embon Malang road from 1899, the mimeographed letter from 1969 in which Sarkies announces the sale of the Oranje hotel (then L.M.S.) because of political instability - and typed memoirs of the events between June 1942 en October 1945, page 2-7.

The memoirs and the accounts of family and friends and their doom in the prison camps and in particular the events from the Oranjehotel, are typewrtitten by Sarkies. Some parts are crossed out, probably because of publication or censorship. In the margin are notes written by hand such as "het is God-geklaagd!!" Fragment: "Op dat oogenblik kwam vanuit het Roode Kruis gebouw een zekere Mevr. Kan aanzetten met een troep jongens en meisjes v.h. Roode Kruis, een groote Hollandsche vlag uitgespreid tusschen hen in houdend en gaande richting Oranje Hotel; ze zongen een vaderlandsch liedje, gingen het hotel in, waar onze manager ze tegenhield en de vlag opborg. Maar de menigte buiten was al buiten zich zelf van woede: plotseling ontstond een knokparty waarvan natuurlyk niet kan bepaald worden wie de eerste slag toediende. Even werden de Indonesiers teruggedreven, maar in dubbel zoo'n aantal kwamen ze direct hierop terug, nu gewapend met bamboespiezen, yzeren staven, messen."
