PASSED

"Clovis ou la France Chrestienne"

Title in pen and grey wash, followed by a series of 24 pasted, numbered and "N.C.F." monogrammed, etched plates, ca. 1700, bound in half sheep leather, 8vo.

Also contains several contemporary drawings in pencil on the reverse sides of the print leafs. The drawn title is an exact copy of the frontispiece of the original French edition of the book by Jean Desmarets de Saint-Sorlin (Paris, 1666), an edition without illustrations. How the title and engravings are related we have not been able to discover. Following Nagler, the monogram N.C.F. can belong to Nicolas Chapron (1st half 17th century) or Nicolas Chevalier (working in Paris, early 18th century). Of the latter, proof engravings for goldsmiths are known. Considering the decorations above and below the engraved scenes in our series, it appears he is the engraver.
