Wim Kan - letter concerning "Dag Koninginnedag" 1957

Double-sided handwritten letter from Wim Kan to Jan Vrijman to express his support for him after the first Dutch television controversy, caused by his first TV documentary "Dag Koninginnedag". Added: a photo of Vrijman by Han Buter. Stamped on reverse and with text 'de enige overgeleverde kiek van de legendarische "dag koninginnedag". Dus onmiddelijk terug naar Vrijman'. Silver gelatin print, 28 x 21.5 cm.

"Dag Koninginnedag" was broadcast on Queen's Day, 31 August 1957. The VPRO presented a show in which the makers by means of films and live interviews explicitly brought to attention a number of historical wrongs during the reign of Wilhelmina. Speakers included a former mutineer of the ship De Zeven Provinciën. Much commotion ensued. Newspapers considered it a disgrace and thousands of VPRO sucscriptions were cancelled. Public apologies followed. Wim Kan, who appeared in the documentary himself, writes in his letter: "'k las in het Parool eens iets over het (ons) televisie schandaal (En toen dacht ik, ik moest U toch even berichten dat het televisie programma goed was naar mijn mening (...) Laat U zich niet uit het veld (van eer) slaan dacht ik zo. (...) en schande! een socialist - een rooie een vuurrooie socialist als ter Laan op een nationale dag het woord te geven! (...) maar wie is er nu eigenlijk boos om dat programma? De Telegraaf, denk ik zo. Nu. Dat weet U dan weer."
