Spines discoloured; an early section of the second volume letting go. Pages 297-304 (37th lesson) missing or skipped, we were unable to verify this as the online digitised copies (KB and Gent library) both only have 184 pages and the accompanying plates. Very rare Amsterdam stage manual with 37 (of 38) lessons appearing in 6 volumes, for stage actors from the Biedermeier era. The two volumes are of unequal thickness, though this is not illogical: the second volume starts with the thirteenth lesson, this lesson is the first of the "Tweede [en laatste] Gedeelte der Cursus". The author explains some matters further in a "Narigt" (after p. 314): "Ik heb veel aan deze uitgave ter liefde voor de kunst opgeofferd, de kosten daar mede gepaard, zijn zoo groot, dat indien ik niet zelve de Plaatjes had geteekend, van de uitgave niets had kunnen worden; aanvanglijk zijn dezelve in koper geëtst, maar de tijd daaraan besteed werd te groot en men verloor daar aan te veel, ik zag naar middelen uit om die in steendruk te vervolgen, dat ging spoediger. Echter moest ik voor dringender bezigheden dit vaak laten liggen. Van daar de trage gang, welke heeft plaats gehad." The list of signatures following is almost pitiably short, but it must have been a comfort that King William I ordered ten copies.
