[Bart Huges] "Homo sapiens correctus"

(The Mechanism of brain Blood Volume). (Amsterdam, 1964), publication in the shape of a roll, 280 x 44.5 cm., with English text surrounding 10 illustrations, title in red felt-tip pen, the illustrations hand-coloured felt-tip pen and with shading in red and blue pen, bottom signature "Amsterdam, Bart Huges" and the note "Made in prison. Copy rights fl.100.000,-".

This copy was attached to a wall with drawing pins: tanned, with water stains, holes and small tears (partly repaired with tape). Very rare publication, our copy bearing very strongly the character of a proof or even a unique copy. Both a Dutch and an English edition exist. The description of a Dutch copy offered online mentions the fact that the English edition consists of several pieces. Our copy, however, is one roll, almost of the size of the Dutch edition (slightly wider and slightly smaller). In the text Huges (then still a student of medicine) maintains that trepanning - drilling a hole in the skull - is supposed to have a beneficial (or: mind-altering) effect on the brains due to more balanced bodily fluids in the brains and spinal cord. He thought that such an operation would relieve the evolutionary detrimental consequences of walking upright. He was thereto inspired by a number of African tribes. On 6 January 1965 he drilled a hole in his own forehead, bringing him instant fame. For more on Huges and his experiment see: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bart_Huges.
