[Fortification atlas] (Introduction à la fortification

dediée a monseigneur le duc de Bourgogne / par de Fer). (Paris, De Fer, 1691-1695), with 9 numbered plates of which 1-7 each facing separate, engraved text leaf (1 leaf for plates 1-2), followed by 3 engraved plates of the Canal de Maintenon and 171 engraved maps, plans (1x folding) and profiles, with engraved index leaf and distance leaf at the end, contemporary marbled calf with ribbed, gilt back with morocco title shield, oblong folio.

This copy lacks the title, introduction and possible subtitles of the various volumes, else all plates (and 2 extra) according to the index present. Nearly the entire bookblock is in good condition, only a few leaves at the beginning and end are frayed, folded and wrinkled; first plate with covered tear and stains in lower margin, the binding is a trifle worn along edges and the front cover has some worm damage. Complete copies of this fortification atlas are extremely rare. The work is divided into 5 groups: Villes de France, Villes de Païs Bas, Villes d'Allemagne, Ville d'Italie and Villes d'Espagne. Contains besides the numerous fortification plates among other things fine maps of Paris, Amsterdam, Basel and Kamieniec, profiles of Heidelberg, Barcelona, Nice and Melian and a map of Malta. The extra plates in this copy are a map of Quebec and a plan of Batavia.
