Sem Presser (1917-1986). "Berg. Commandant P.D.A."

Original photo, 23 x 16.5 cm., with title and directions in pencil and copyright stamp "Anefo" (Algemeen Nederlandsch Fotobureau) and numbered "HL 4832" on reverse.

With: "Westerveld, een der beulen Amersfoort. Westerveld P.D.A. 1945". Similar and similar-sized photo as the former, with the same features on reverse (numbered "HL 4879"). Iconic photos, part of a photo report of Amersfoort concentration camp shortly after the war, when it had become an internment camp for war criminals and collaborators. The photo of camp commander Berg is (differently cut) displayed on the Wikipedia page about Presser: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sem_Presser. During World War II, Karl Peter Berg (1907-1949) was SS-Schutzhaftlagerführer II under SS-Obersturmführer Walter Heinrich in Amersfoort concentration camp and succeeded him as Lagerkommandant after Heinrich's departure in 1943. He was executed by firing squad, remarkable for unexpectedly shouting "fire" first himself. See: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Peter_Berg (again with this photo). The second photo is of the Dutch camp-SS man ("Blockführer") Berend Johan Westerveld, also known as "The Bicycle Repairman". He was standing besides Berg when the photo was taken.
