Leiden, in de Plantijnsche Druckerije van François van Ravelingen, 1618, (32),1495,(1 blank),(56) p., with finely hand-coloured and GOLD-HEIGHTENED engraved title page and countless woodcuts in the text, finely bound in contemporary full vellum across wooden boards, copper clamps and ribbed back with title in pen, folio.

A very good copy for this type of usable book. Inside margin of the title and next two leaves expertly reinforced with thin paper, the title besides with small tear and paper with crease due to the printing; contents here and there slightly tanned; vellum partly torn across top hinge and with several other small defects (e.g. worn outer corners and spine ends). The second Dutch edition of Dodonaeus' Stirpium historiae Pemptades (1583), with circa 150 additional woodcuts and increased with the descriptions of American plants by Carolus Clusius. The title page, normally already very fine, is with this exceptional copy beautifully antiquely hand-coloured and gold-heightened. One copy digitised by Google shows a letterpress line right below the engraving on the title page: "Is te coope t'Antwerpen inden Plantijnschen Winckel". This is not the case with our copy.
