The total amount has to do with the crisis in Germany; 84.45 guilders were taken off the account. R.M. Nijhoff was a great collector of art, books and manuscripts and a well-known figure in the artistic and intellectual circles of his time. He organised various exhibitions of his collection, for example in Deventer and Wijk bij Duurstede. See also lots 1386 and 1387. The letters in this lot by Otto Dicke (1918-1984) concern his Parisian sketches of which Nijhoff bought one unseen. The letter by Pierre Kemp (1886-1967) accompanies the signed poem "Philosophie" (published in the collection Standard Book of Classic Blacks, 1946), with on reverse "Voor de verzameling van R.M. Nijhoff". The letters by Henri Adriaen Naber (1867-1944) concern his publications and are accompanied by two documents on Cornelis Drebbel and his submarine. The letter by Herbert van der Poll (1877-1963) of Arti et Amicitiae concerns a painting Nijhoff won at a raffle in 1942 (the list of winning numbers has been added) and which will be shipped to him (total 28 letters with additions).
