Small 8vo, 2 volumes + Supplement, leather, uniformly bound, title on spine in red, green and gilt stamping, marbled endpapers, edges red, 249; 297,(3) and X,254 pp., complete with a Tahitian glossary with ca. 300 words, the first of its kind. Water stain in the first volume, else good copies. This early and popular edition without the maps and prints as published.

Louis Antoine, Comte de Bougainville was a French explorer; he began his voyage around the world in 1766. In January 1768 he sailed through the Strait of Magellan. In 1769 he approached Australia, but (in contrast with James Cook) he did not dare to cross the Great Barrier Reef (total 3).
