[Studio Herz/ Sigmund Löw] 60 photos of painters in their studio, with documentation

made in 1903 by Studio Herz/ Sigmund Löw (1845-1910), all but one ± 24 x 30 cm. (the size of the negatives), partly with data such as the artist's name, the address of the studio and the date on which the photo was taken in the negative, nearly all with the same data or only the name of the artist in pencil on reverse, prints from 1946 or later by copyright holder W.M.A. Deppe in Naarden and from his private possessions, with a sizable stack of accompanying typed documents.

Splendid series of famous portraits of artists in their studio, nearly all with a (possibly unknown) variant. W.M.A. Deppe acquired the negatives and worldwide rights of the series in 1946. He chose to utilise 30 of these (which became the well-known series), and from the documentation it appears he did so very actively, with a standard form listing all 30 photos. He made an agreement with director K.G. Boon of the Dutch Rijksmuseum allowing the museum to make prints of 35 negatives (these became 36), but with two or sometimes three prints provided to him for free. This means that the Rijksmuseum did not receive a large part of the negatives, but only those selected by Deppe. Panorama weekly was loaned 30 negatives (for 350 guilder), the board of the Stedelijk Museum ordered and received 9 photos (for 65 guilder). The Museum voor Het Gooi en Omstreken and the Centraal Museum Utrecht reported to lack funds. From unused/ used standard stationery it appears that Debbe exploited his series worldwide; the letterhead states: "Publicité dans tous les journeaux et revues du monde." ("Advertenties voor alle werelddeelen"). It also appears that Deppe (then already at an advanced age, in his own words) wanted to sell the collection of photos (not the negatives) through curator Pierre Jansen to the Gemeentemuseum Arnhem; Deppe attached a list with the artists. The documentation includes letters/ examples with agreements on a huge amount of picture postcards with reproductions of the photos, to be made and sold in the USA. "Wordt gedacht aan de verkoop van 1.000.000 kaarten met een winst van 3 $ cent per hoofd, wat neerkomt op een winst van 3.000.000 $ cent ofwel $ 30.000,- ofwel Fl. 75.000.-- (Dit ter stimuleering." The collection consists of photos of Louis Apol (2x), Nicolaas Bastert (4x, incl. 1 double), Christoffel Bisschop, Johannes Braakensiek (2x), Mendes da Costa, Eduard Frankfort (3x), Arnold Gorter (4x, incl. with/ of his wife); Bart van Hoven, Abraham Hesselink (2x), John Hulk (2x), Isaac Israels, Jozef Israëls (2x), Hendrik Jansen (2x), Sophie Jansen-Grothe (2x, in the same studio as her husband Hendrik Jansen), Mari ten Kate (2x), Jacob Kever, Willem Nakken (2x), Hendrik Krabbé (2x), Simon Maris (2x, incl. with model), Sientje Mesdag-Van Houten (2x), Albert Neuhuijs (2x), Jan van Oort (3x, incl. 1 double), Benjamin Prins (2x), Albrecht Reicher (2x), Julius van de Sande Bakhuyzen (2x), Thérèse Schwartze, Hobbe Smith (5x, incl. 2 double, with (nude) models), Nicolaas van der Waaij and Jan Wijsmüller.
