PASSED

[Friesland] Hayo Tuinhout (1757-1811). Original nomination to become "Commis-Generaal

van de Convoijen en Licenten over alle Vereenigde Provincien bij het Departement der Marine in Friesland". Manuscript on fold. vellum, 44 x 55 cm, with 2 wax and paper seals, dated 25 September 1795 ("Het Eerste Jaar der Bataafsche Vrijheid"), signed in pen in lower margin by "Presideerende" T. Joha and "onzen Griffier" W. Marle (?), and with check in pen dated 19 October 1795 in left-hand margin, signed by L.E. van Eck, the top seal signed by T. Lucadou.

Original document which records the nomination of Hayo Tuinhout as Commies-Generaal van de Konvooien en Licenten, a very important function dealing with the "Scheepen van Oorlog en Equipage dienende tot bevrijdinge van de Zee en Stroomen". The document is headed by the motto "Gelijkheid, Vrijheid, Broederschap". Tuinhout took part in the revolt of the patriots led by Coert Lambertus van Beyma. He became mayor of Franeker in 1778, but had to flee the country because of the invasion of the Prussian troops, only to return in 1795. He became chairman of the Frisian States in May 1795. Conveniently enough, the Museum Hannemahuis in Harlingen preserves a beautiful portrait of Tuinhout painted in 1799, so we have a face for the key figure of our document. On the signatures present on the document: Thomas Philppus Joha (1750-1812) deputy of the Dutch States General for Friesland at the time of signing. Lambert Engelbert van Eck (1754-1803) was member of the first and second "Nationale Vergadering" in 1796-1798. Tobie Lucadou was "Parapheur en distributeur van de Zegels in de steden". The signature "W. Marle" (?) is probably that of Gerard Willem van Marle (1752-1799), like Joha a member of the States General, but for Overijssel and Zwolle. His signature is also present below the short description of the contents on verso, which becomes visible when the leaf is folded.
