PASSED

[Maarssen. De Leth] Very rare combination: "Het Oud Adelyk huys en ridderhofstad Ter Meer,

toebehoorende den Oogwelgeboren Heere Vincent Maximiliaan, baron van Lockhorst, Heere van ter Meer, Maarssen (...)." "l'Ancien & Noble Chateau de Ter Meer (...)." Large engraved bird's-eye view on two lvs., 60 x 84 cm, (Amsterdam), "Geteekent en in 't Koper gebragt door Hendrik de Leth", (c. 1730-1740), in the top a large coat of arms flanked by scrolls with the title in Dutch and French, with engraved legend listing 24 numbered parts of the view in lower margin.

Neatly restored copy, the two lvs. detached; with smoothened folds, (mainly closed) (marginal) tears (on folds) and a tiny hole. In good condition for this kind of very large print. Very fine impression with much contrast. A marvellous large overview of the castle, its huge gardens and of Maarssen itself (at the right), one of the most splendid Dutch country houses, by Hendrik de Leth (1703-1766). The castle was built in 1710 and was unfortunately demolished after aheving stood for about 200 years. With: (2) "Het Oud Adelyk huys en ridderhofstad Ter Meer, toebehoorende den Oogwelgeboren Heere Vincent Maximiliaan, baron van Lockhorst, Heere van ter Meer, Maarssen (...)." "l'Ancien & Noble Chateau de Ter Meer (...)." Complete series of 26 engraved views of the buildings, gardens and fountains (incl. the bird's-eye view serving as the title leaf, a much reduced copy of the large overview), (Amsterdam), "getekent, in 't koper gebragt en uyt gegeven door Hend. de Leth", (c. 1730-1740), all with 2-line caption in Dutch and French below the image, finely bound in contemp. blindst. vellum, spine with gilt compartments and title in ink, 8vo size. A few plates splitting on central fold (bird's eye view w. sm. horizontal tear). Bookblock sl. loosening. With the owner's entry of J.M. Krijger (perhaps Jan Krijger (1874-1951)) on first free endpaper. The Rijksmuseum dates the series c. 1740, PiCarta c. 1730. The combination of the large-sized wallview with the series of views is hardly ever offered for sale. Bound with: (3) Claas Bruin. De zegepraalende Vecht, vertoonende verscheidene gesichten van lustplaatsen, heeren huysen en dorpen; beginnende van Uitrecht en met Muyden besluytende. Introd. (with plate-index) by A. de Leth. Amsterdam, Widow N. Visscher, 1719, 15,(1),39,(1) textp., engr. frontisp. ("Speelreis Langs de Vechtstroom"), 1 fold. map, 102 double-p. views by D Stoopendaal (numbered 1-98 and 94a-94d) Fold. map torn in two (reattached). A few plates splitting/ sl. dam. on central fold. Otherwise fine. First edition of one of the finest books on 18th century Dutch stately homes, also important for our knowledge of garden-architecture of the period (total 1 print and 2 series of prints in 1 volume.).
