[Treatise on wisdom in the spirit of Montaigne] De la Sagesse

Livres trois. Par M. Pierre le Charron, Parisien, Chanoine Theologal & Chantre en l'Eglise Cathedrale de Comdom [sic]. Iouxte la coppie Imprimée a Bourdeaux, Simon Millanges, 1606, (1),776,(5) p., title printed in red and black, contemporary blindstamped vellum, small 8vo.

Binding lacks the ties and is slightly stained; various old owner's names/comments in pen on the title page. One nice "wisdom" is written in contemporary handwriting on the final free endpaper: "Si vis pace frui, si vis gaudere quiete, Parvis contentus dilige stare domi" ("If one wants to enjoy peace, if one wants to enjoy quiet; Choose to stay home, satisfied with small things"). This is a verbatim quotation from a poem on the monastic life by Arnoldus Buerick (or Budericus, 15th century). Early edition, the only one which includes the complete text of the first edition from 1601 (the 1604 edition omits several passages). Highly influential and oft-translated work on wisdom, in which a philosophy on morals based on the ideas of his friend Michel Montaigne is systematically elaborated. See extensively on Pierre Charron (1541-1603): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Charron.
