[Maritime history. Very rare signal book] Afbeelding van alle de generale zeinen,

die gedaan en geobserveerd werden in 's lands vloot, zoo in het zeilen en ankeren by daag en nagt, als ten tijde van gevegt; met de beteekenis van ieder signaal, en aanwyzing der plaatszen daar dezelve in de origineele Hollandsze en Engelsze zein-boeken te vinden zyn (...). Te zamen gesteld (...) door N. Govertz, schryver in 's lands-dienst ter zee. Amsterdam, voor den autheur, 1746, (8),(10) letterpress p., with 142 illustrations (including intertitles) on 71 engraved plates with the signal concerned handcoloured and the reverse with letterpress text, and with "Aanhangzel voor particuliere zeinen" containing 12 illustrations (6 different) on 6 uncoloured, engraved plates (to be completed personally, here unused), contemporary calf, small 8vo.

Here and there slightly stained/ slightly smeared colouring. Endpapers renewed, binding with restorations. Approved copy with the signature in pen of Govertz at the end of the Voor-berigt. Very rare pocket signal book; from 1950 on it appeared on the market only a handful of times. The intertitles are: "Generale Zeynen by Daag" (plate 1-57), "Zeynen in Mist" (plate 58-61, signals by cannon fire) and "Zeynen by Nagt" (other, with a combination of lighthouses and cannon fire). Govertz based his work on the signal book by Greenwood, with the letterpress explanation on the reverse of the plates with each sign its location in the official English and Dutch signal books is listed.
