[In fine binding with gilt portraits] Corpvs Doctrinae Christianae.
Qvae est svmma orthodoxi et catholici dogmatis, complectens doctrinam puram & ueram Euangelii Iesu Christi (...) Philippo Melanchtone. Nunc edita ad usum ecclesiae sanctae publicum et privatum (...). Leipzig, (Ernst Vögelin), 1563, (2),982,(10) p., with woodcut printer's mark on the title, strictly contemporary rich blindstamped pigskin across wooden boards, front board with gilt centered portrait of Philippus Melanchton, between owner's initials "B.L.H.V." and "L.V.H." and date 1571, back board with gilt centered portrait of Martin Luther, both portraits surrounded by 3 roll borders (incl. with personifications of Spes, Charitas and Fides), ribbed back with old title label, 2 finely finished copper clamps, folio.
Lacks part of the introduction and a large part of the index; title waterstained and with crudely erased old owner's name; here and there small wormholes in bookblock and binding, boards slightly stained. A very fine example of a German renaissance book binding, with owner's name Martinus Tanner and date 1589 on free endpaper and with an annotation concerning the gift of the book in 1589 on inside front board.
