Engraved map by Cornelis van Baarsel (1761-1826) and his son Willem Cornelis van Baarsel (1791-1854), after Jan Blanken Jzn. (1755-1838), Amsterdam, weduwe Gerard Hulst van Keulen, 1825, 49 x 101 cm., printed on cloth, with fine central title cartouche, compass rose (oriented west top) and inset illustration of 2 cross sections through the canal.

Folded, with central brownstaining to horizontal middle fold and some other staining/ foxing, a few minor holes in margins. Koeman, Handleiding r45 and Atlas van Stolk 6600 (both list no copies on cloth); cf. F. Muller, Nederlandsche Historieplaten, 6217, which mentions a similar map by E. Maaskamp, also from 1825. Rare map, especially copies on cloth, which proudly depicts one of the largest infrastructural projects of the 19th century. The canal, with a total length of 75 km. and built on the orders of king William I by some 9000 workers, was needed in order to make the port of Amsterdam accessible for larger ships. However, it soon turned out to be too narrow, and in 1876 the North Sea Canal was finished.
