Richard Pococke (1704 –1765) was an English prelate and anthropologist. From 1737-1741 he visited the Near East, visiting Egypt, ascending the Nile as far as Philae, and then passed into Palestine, Lebanon & Syria, Asia Minor, and Greece. He often visited places where only few travellers had been before.
